If you had skills, in, say, assembling human beings, and you wanted to put together the ultimate Consulting Polymath, it might go a little something like this: Start with a soul that believes we all have the power to influence the world for the better, and that it’s our obligation to do just that. Add a heart that beats for helping companies, teams, and individuals build powerful identities to change said world. Attach a mind honed by both undergrad and graduate degrees in…electrical engineering? (Why not). Sprinkle in stints at Bechtel, Raytheon, and Microsoft. Layer in experience conducting workshops for companies from start-ups, to universities, to government contractors, to non-profits, to large companies.
If you still have room, pack in volunteer service hours on nonprofit boards in Dallas, Seattle, Tucson, and Las Vegas, and running programs in Seattle, Louisiana, and Ghana. Do these things, and you might almost have made yourself a Mel Mitchell. Almost. Because – of course, duh — you’d have forgotten his upcoming book release, his Chair position for the National Society of Black Engineers, and the muddy, muddy sneakers from all those adventure races he runs. It’s that simple.
